RECENTLY. (AS A PLAYWRIGHT)

Summer/Fall 2019
SPACE ON RYDER FARM (New York City, NY)
I finished my 5-week residency as Working Farm member with my fellow members Kevin Artigue, Kate Benson, David Greenspan, Jenny Rachel Weiner, Or Matias, Jahna Ferron-Smith, & Mia Chung. It's been an incredible time communing with my cohorts, other residents, volunteers, interns, apprentices and staff members! And I have a new play in the works entitled THE HIGH SEAS. Stay tuned for more details about a presentation in the Spring at Playwrights Horizons!

UCROSS W/ THE ALLEY THEATRE (Ucross, WY)
Writing residency for HIGH SCHOOL PLAY: A NOSTALGIA FEST

I had an amazing week at the famed UCross residency with the Alley Theatre and the most stellar roster of playwrights including Robert Askins, Arthur Jolly, Molly Beach Murphy, and Claire Kiechel. We wrote, developed, and ate steaks. It was grand!

"I’m not going to divulge any more details than that, because this is one of those plays you just need to experience for yourself. I will say that Chum’s performance of his beautifully poetic play was well deserving of the standing ovation he received from the captivated audience."

Theater Mirror
"What Chum’s play can offer the audience is a chance to wrestle with those big ideas about heritage, identity and America. It’s not about providing the solutions to any of his questions or issues, it’s a matter of gathering a group of people together in that place called the theater and giving everyone the chance to just think for a while, to listen to the perspective of someone unlike themselves and really try to see and understand their world. It may seem like a small step, but it’s perhaps a step we need."

The Arts Fuse
"MRT’s production of KNYUM succeeds in a number of ways; it is an engaging drama that also makes a strong argument for the inclusion of diverse voices in the theater. This show is unlike anything else New England theatre currently has to offer — in the best possible way."

Merrimack Valley Magazine
"The play is based on Chum’s own life, and his performance crackles with raw honesty. The audience participates in this astonishing journey of self-discovery, which is at times humorous, at other times dark and unforgiving in its depiction of the inner and outer conflicts of a second-generation immigrant. Chum performs with the weight from generations of anguish, yet with an honest smile and open heart. He is instantaneously likeable, charming and wildly entertaining."
